CITY PALACE

STYLE & TASTE

Furniture production in the 19th century was shaped by the tension between aristocratic representation and the simplicity of the Biedermeier period.
The resulting diversity of forms offered both nobility and the bourgeoisie a choice between decorative embellishments and the purist beauty of craftsmanship.

Innovations in manufacturing and the emergence of the first printed catalogs also made furniture more accessible, allowing for the individual composition of interiors – with good taste being key to standing out.

Join us for this guided tour at the CITY PALACE and discover the imaginative furniture creations of Neo-Rococo, Classicism, and Biedermeier.

MAIDS & GODDESSES

Since women were denied formal artistic education at academies until the 19th century, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun and Angelica Kauffman count among the few successful female artists of their time.

This guided tour not only focuses on these two painters, but also on 18th- and 19th-century artworks depicting women.
The Princely Collections offer a wide range of representations – from grand neoclassical portraits to intimate Biedermeier genre scenes. You’ll encounter everything from a princess portrayed as a Greek goddess to a curious maidservant.

Meet devout, dreamy, and self-assured women and explore how their portrayal evolved in a period when art increasingly sought to reflect character rather than social class.

GARDEN PALACE

SINS & VIRTUES

Pride, greed, lust, wrath, gluttony, envy, and sloth – the seven deadly sins reflect human weaknesses and vices, and have been recurring themes in Renaissance and Baroque art.

During this guided tour, we embark on a search for stories that explore these very themes. Sometimes subtly, sometimes more overtly, the artworks presented at the GARDEN PALACE depict Greek gods and humans alike being tempted. In contrast, other works celebrate virtuous saints and heroes, who serve as moral role models pointing the way to righteousness.

A fascinating interplay that shaped the art of its time.

KNOWLEDGE & POWER
Lecture

Learn more about the history of the Princely House of Liechtenstein and its Austrian roots in this engaging lecture.
The neoclassical library, with its approximately 100,000 volumes, provides a fitting setting and a unique atmosphere for this exploration.

Collected over five centuries, the library’s books cover a wide range of topics and offer insights into the history and significance of the princely family, as well as the personal interests of its individual members – from art, architecture, and science to economics and horse breeding.

During the lecture, we will present highlights from this treasure trove of knowledge and share the story of how the library found its way to the GARDEN PALACE.
